The Rt Hon David Jones MP has issued the following statement in response to the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:
“Like all of Her Majesty’s people, I am profoundly saddened by this news.
“The Queen was the longest-lived British monarch; most of us cannot remember a time when she was not a reassuring presence at the head of our country.
“The Queen’s life was dedicated to the interests of the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Speaking in Cape Town on her 21st birthday, she promised:
“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.”
“Her Majesty was true to her word. Her life was indeed long, and throughout it she guided us with grace, wisdom, charm and good humour. She never put a foot wrong; she never let us down.
“Our sorrow at her death will be tempered by our knowledge that she lived a long, healthy, fulfilled life, supported by HRH Prince Philip and her devoted children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“All our thoughts must be with the Royal Family as they mourn, with all of us, the passing of the foremost woman of our age.”
