Clwyd West MP, David Jones, has welcomed the announcement by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities that an award of £292,000 has been made out of the Community Ownership Fund to enable the purchase and renovate the Sun Inn in Eryrys, near Mold.
The purchase will allow the Sun to become a social hub for the village, complementing the nearby Dewi Sant Community Centre.
The Government’s Community Ownership Fund enables community groups to take ownership of assets and amenities at risk of being lost, and run them for the benefit of their community, safeguarding the viability of town and village centres.
Under the scheme, over 70 community assets, including historic theatres, pubs and museums, will be protected with £25 million Government funding, with successful community projects receiving up to £2 million for the first time, and three heritage theatres winning the top awards.
This funding will ensure local people continue to reap the benefits of their valued community assets, preserving them for future generations and securing a brighter future for their area. Museums, pubs, parks and cinemas across the country will benefit, including the Sun Inn, which will be kept alive under the £25 million funding package announced today.
Through the scheme, voluntary and community groups can bid for funding to acquire important assets, including pubs, so they invest in the long-term future of their area and run amenities for the good of the community.
This is just the latest round of funding as the Government continues to deliver on its long-term levelling up agenda, spreading opportunities and prosperity across the country.
Commenting, David Jones said:
“Christmas has certainly come early for supporters of the Sun Inn, who will be delighted by the award of £292,000 to fund the acquisition of the property.
“This shows the real value of the excellent Community Ownership Fund, which will secure the long-term future of this important community asset.
“The award is a demonstration of the Government’s levelling up agenda in action, helping achieve a brighter future for communities across our country.”
