JONES WELCOMES NORTH WALES GROWTH DEAL

 Westminster, 16 March, 2016

Clwyd West MP, David Jones, has welcomed the announcement in today’s Budget statement by Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, that the Government is working towards a new growth deal for North Wales.

The proposed deal will pave the way for North Wales to benefit fully from the dynamic Northern Powerhouse agenda.

Speaking after the Budget, David Jones said:

“I am very pleased that the Chancellor has recognised the importance of the Northern Powerhouse to North Wales.  I discussed the issue with him at a meeting last month.

“I also had a meeting with the Prime Minister only two weeks ago when I discussed the concept with him.

“The Northern Powerhouse offers huge opportunities for North Wales, but it is essential that the Government should work closely with the North Wales Economic Ambition Board and the Welsh Government to progress matters.

“I have therefore arranged for the Chancellor to meet representatives of the Economic Ambition Board with me at Westminster next month. They will then be able to explain to him their views as to the priorities for North Wales economic growth.

“For far too long, North Wales has played second fiddle to South Wales in terms of economic development. Now we have a Government that fully recognises what we who live here already know: that North Wales is closely linked with the economy of the North West of England, and that if we are to grow economically, we need to have a joined-up, cross-border approach to development.

“Today’s Budget opens the door to increased prosperity for our region and I look forward to working with representatives of other parties to help achieve it.”
