David Jones, MP for Clwyd West, took action today over traffic chaos experienced in Rhos on Sea and Colwyn Bay over the weekend.
Amid road works on the A55, both and Conwy Tunnel and Junction 23 in Old Colwyn, motorists seeking an alternative route got stuck when they found the promenade was closed.
David Jones said:
‘Although the local authority and Traffic Wales have been co-ordinating, it seems the works at the Old Colwyn section of the A55 were urgent and unavoidable.
‘People appear to be attempting to avoid the single lane section of the A55 by diverting along the promenade, which is of course closed due to on-going regeneration and coastal defence works.
‘We suspect that people are relying on GPS and Google Maps to find alternative routes, so we have contacted Google to notify them. We have also asked Traffic Wales to install signs with live news of expected delay times and encouraging motorists to remain on the A55.
‘I have heard from a number of constituents who are concerned by the congestion on smaller roads around Rhos on Sea and Colwyn Bay, many of whom experienced huge delays over the weekend. I am pleased to have obtained confirmation that no further works are due over the Easter break.’
Colwyn Bay promenade, which is undergoing regeneration and coastal defence works, is due to be closed until June. The works at Junction 23 in Old Colwyn are due to be completed on Tuesday 4 April. Traffic Wales are not planning any road works on the A55 over the Easter break.
