Wales must have an NHS volunteer scheme

Clwyd West MP David Jones has urged the Welsh Government (WG) to sign up to the NHS Responder Volunteer scheme, which has so far attracted the support of more than 500,000 public-spirited people who want to help the NHS during the coronavirus crisis.
NHS Volunteers will help hard-pressed NHS staff in a variety of ways, including: moving equipment, ferrying discharged patients, taking food and other supplies to people in self-isolation, and providing telephone support to help relieve loneliness.
David Jones said:
“The NHS Responder Volunteer scheme has proven hugely popular, and underlines just how much people want to help others at this time of national crisis.
“It is very disappointing that the WG are apparently refusing to extend it to Wales. I have no doubt that many people in this area would be very keen to help out, and to do their bit to combat the effects of this dreadful virus.
‘Many of my colleagues from across Wales have told me that people in their constituencies want to help, too.
“There is a great sense of public-spiritedness in Welsh communities and the WG should make use of it.
“I urge the WG to work with the Department of Health and Social Care at Westminster to bring the NHS Responder Volunteer Scheme to Wales as soon as possible.”
