The right of European Union nationals to continue living in the UK | September 2016

I have some e-mail about the right of European Union nationals to live and work in the United Kingdom.
Although the referendum on 23 July resulted in the decision to leave the EU, the decision about when to trigger Article 50, to start of the formal process of leaving the EU, is still being considered. During this time, and until the Article 50 negotiations have concluded, the UK remains a member of the EU, with the same rules on free movement of people continuing to apply.
Clearly, it is too early to say what the result of the negotiations will be, but under current EU law, those who have resided in the UK for at least 5 years automatically have the right to permanent residence and EU nationals who have lived for at least 6 years in the UK are eligible to apply for British citizenship.
