Travel advice: Australia

The Australian Government has prohibited all international flights from entering Australia. Consequently, a number of airline operators have announced that outbound international flights from Australia have been suspended, or will be suspended shortly.

The Government’s advice for British nationals already in Australia is that they should contact their airline, travel provider and, importantly, insurance provider for the latest travel information and assistance with accommodation etc. Those who wish to return to the UK should do so as soon as possible, but should also be aware that the situation remains fast moving and you should be prepared to remain in place; if necessary, for an extended period of time.

The British High Commission in Australia has advised all UK nationals provide their contact details so they can be contacted directly with updates and further information, including commercial flight availability to the UK. They request that UK nationals provide their: full name, as it appears on their passport; Passport Number; D.O.B; and current location (state); to:

If you require emergency help, including with accommodation arrangements, the British High Commission advise that you call: +61 2 6270 6666. However, due to the high volume of calls they are receiving, they are unable to help with individual travel plans. For assistance with travel plans they advise that you communicate direct with your travel provider and insurance company.

The High Commission do not advise that you cancel your original flights as this may hamper your ability to fly out of Australia, should you be required to remain there until the travel restrictions have been lifted.

Additionally, if you are concerned about the travel disruption affecting your visa, you are advised to contact the Australian Department for Home Affairs on: 131 881, or visit their website for further information:

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office are working around the clock to return UK nationals stranded abroad. However, this is an unprecedented situation with tens of thousands of British citizens stuck in countries across the world – which often are permitting only very limited, if any, access for UK bound flights.
